tax credits,baffled.

i have been awarded to get my ctc backdated to the 9th of october, now would my first payment i would have received in my bank have been on the 9th or the 16th of october.
im thinking my 1st payment of my weekly ctc would have been on the 16th,
reason i ask is theres 5 payment dates i have not had yet, which are the following.....
9th
16th
23rd
30
6th nov i received a payment of 115.00 on the 27th nov and 63.10 on the 28th november which is my weekly amount im due. the 115.00 is backpayments for the 20th and the 13th november.
..........
now im owed the payments from the 6th nov,30th,23rd,16,9th, october,im told i will be receiving another 272.00 is this correct or am i missing something. why do we never get the full amount back.

  • What does the award letter actually say on the last page? That is the bit to look at.
Mine states that my award is X based on a certain amount of income deduction for CTC and similar for the WTC that we were due. Next it states both amounts and gives the total due to be paid and then it should say - we have paid you Y on or will pay Y on date and thereafter £63.10 every 4 weeks after that. If you add all of those payments up - do they come to the award amount? If yes then you are getting what you're entitled to. There may be an adjustment at renewal once your exact income for the year is finalised, but that will not happen until after April. With TC's it is not about when it should have gone into your account as such, but simply date of claim to end of tax year. So 9th Oct to 5th April is the number of days, which is how it is worked for this year as it is pro rata. 178 days in all. So approx 6 payments with around 1.5 weeks on top. You will get it back at end of tax year if there is a line that says potential payment due of Z near to bottom of page. I certainly have that and it is ITR of £1340, but due to income drop may be nearer £1600 - I will find out at renewal. But as with anything to do with TC's I do not count my chickens etc.

It is because when the system finally processes the claim, it generally takes the amount due for the rest of the tax year and pays you based on that.

It doesn't work out what the weekly payment would be and then say you have missed 5 weeks and pay you 5 x weekly payment and then the same amount going forward.

It works out a payment schedule based on the time left in the year.

So overall you do get the right amount by 5 April, but not in the way you would expect.

  • thanks for the reply's,i have not received my award letter off them yet,i got the information when i rang them.
  • also im sick to the back teeth of them, lol
i tel them on the 1st of august told them my son was moving here and attending collage here, which he does, and started on the 3rd september.
i was receiving ctc for my oldest son who had just turned 18 and was moving out to be near is univercity hes now attending, his last payment was on the 30th of august, they would haave stopped on the 31st in any case.
after spending a fortune on tel calls since the 1st of nov asking as to why i had no payments,i was told because it got sent to head office n never came back,so i was made to fill in a new claim form,to which im now backdated to the 9th oct.
    ...
now i have to appeal again 3rd time this other 2 rejected as i cannot appeal until a award decision as been made.
i want it backdating to the start of september,i did as i was told i gave them 4 weeks notice that my son was moving in with me.
    ....
now iv'e spoke to managers, supervisors, other advisors, and not 1 of them told me what a advisor did yesterday....
that after my initial call to them on the 1st of aug,the reason why it was cancelled was because they never had my sons date of birth.
the advisor yesterday said he was baffled by this because it would have been one of the first things he would have asked me,and he wouldn't have been able to refer it to head office as the system would not have allowed him too....
i was told it was referred and i did give the gent on the 1st of aug my sons date of birth, why would i wait til the 1st of november til i rang them asking about my payments if i had not given him the date of birth.

I'm sorry but if you had called on 1st Aug to advise that your son was coming to live with you from 3rd Sept, you would have been told to call back on or just after he had moved in. Children cannot be added to a claim in advance so the details couldn't have been taken from you at the time.
