Suitcases

Are these suitcases any good? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2850368.htm They were £69.99 but are now reduced to £52.49. I haven't got a clue what to look out for when purchasing suitcases. I don't want to spend too much on suitcases as the last one got broke between us checking in at an airport and us getting the suitcases at arrivals.

Since no one has responded does this mean the suitcases mentioned above are no good?

have you been to TKMaxx - they have loads of suitcases and you can try them out, the ones in argos you can't and as I have no experince with them I can't say if they are any good

I have a delsey hard case, seen me well all over the world

Personally I dont like hard cases as if you are packing and you are 'slightly fuller' than when you left, you struggle to close the case.
One thing that I do look out for when purchasing suitcases is - Make sure that the wheels are sturdy and that the handle is strong and also long enough to use without having to be uncomfortable.

Personally, I would spend a little bit more on suitcases. As they say... you pay for what you get!

It may be worth finding a set where the smallest one falls inside the cabin baggage size limit - 55x40x20, I think

Just noticed they are up to their original price again, £69.99.

Are the M&S ones better than the Argos ones?

I must admit, I don't like the hard cases. They are quite heavy before you put anything into them. My cases are also expandable which is really useful.

I travel all over the world and have learnt the hard way that cheap cases are cheap for a reason. If Virgin Alantic can totally destroy a £400 Samsonite hard case (even the Samsonite repair point were gobsmacked) they will make light work of anything on the cheap side.

Look at luggage as an investment. Get it right and you will be able to use it trip after trip.

My current set is the Samsonite Sahora range which has hard corners yet soft sides and has been round the world a number of times now. In addition the cases have 4 wheels which once you have used them will make you wonder why people still struggle with 2 wheels.

Of course good cases cost more money but shop around. Also if Samsonite is your thing, they do have stores in most of the outlet villages.

And finally, don't get carried away with anything too big. The limits on luggage by the airlines are getting tight these days. The reason I had to buy a new set was that Virgin imposed a size limit on checked luggage as well as a weight limit and my nice big packing cases were no longer allowed. I fear this trend is set to continue.

i would go for a wheeled holdhall with extendable handle, they will be lighter than hard cases and even soft cases

having had 2 softsided suitcases let me down recently both after a couple of trips an antler revelation and american tourister admittedly cheap ones both about £40, i wont bother with suitcases again

i feel that a good holdhall is more suited to getting thrown about than a rigid box, i was quite surprised just how the suitcases started to fall apart, whereas umpteen trips with a holdhall, it just seems to take the knocks a lot better

of course spending at the top of the range in suitcases is a different matter

its surprising just how big a 80 litre capacity suitcase is to its equivalent holdhall size, in this day of weight restrictions on airlines every kilo counts
