Black beams

We are moving into a 1960's bungalow soon which has some lovely black beams in the bedrooms.
What is the quickest way I can make them white? My OH thinks I will be painting them white for weeks and will just end up with a grey sludge colour and should leave them. But I hate them and I know they will annoy me whilst laying in bed looking up at them.
All ideas are really appreciated.

Your OH is wrong, of course you can paint over them and get a white (or any other colour finish you want). It'll likely just mean a few extra coats.
The previous occupier of my office premised painted all the woodwork a very dark burgundy colour, surprisingly if i remember correctly we covered it with an undercoat and two top coats. Its still looking good 5 years later.0 -
Well depends if it was painted in the first place, look at the finish if it was not painted, then you may ruin the finish by painting.0
