Pre-pay electric meter charge

We have a British Gas electric meter in the house. Today the alarm went off to tell us that we were running out. As we were in a hurry to get out of the house we put it on emergency and left.

Got home and topped up online and put the key in the meter. The meter readings are as follows:

Credit on card: £5
Emergency credit remaining: £4.45
Credit after topping up: £3.07(???)

Been in this house a year and a half now and never had this happen after putting emergency in. Where has the rest of me money gone?
