Postage Costs

Hi All,

Won an item on Ebay last week (a pair of baby shorts) and the postage costs were listed at £2.70 for 1st class delivery. Seemed a lot but as I won the item for 99p wasn't too bothered.

Anyway the item has arrived in the post today and it is in a jiffy bag with a 2nd class large letter stamp on it. 90p I think they cost?!

Would you message the buyer or just leave it and just be grateful to have won the item for so little?

Just a bit fed up with Ebay at the min, I would only ever be honest with my buyers yet another item I won the other day was delivered yesterday and I would have just chucked it in the bin. Certainly wouldn't have described it as 'like new'!

I would message the seller, you didn't get the service advertised also so keep that in mind, it's not just an overcharge.

I would message seller politely first as well in case they hadn't realised they had got the class of postage and the size wrong. 2nd class large letetr is 69p, so hopefully they will give you part of the difference back. If not that is what the stars are for.

I'd also send them a polite message.

It always makes you feel disappointed when you realise you've been ripped off for postage. It's a trust thing...
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Thanks everyone, wasn't sure if I was just being a bit grumpy! Will send them a polite message just querying the cost and see what happens.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm totally against claiming postage back after winning.

BUT - not when they say 1st class and send 2nd. Go for it - you never got what you paid for.

No doubt they tried to save, after selling for 99p. But i always check what delivery i stated - and stick to it or upgrade - never downgrade.

What would the opinion be if you had no idea how much the item actually weighed say for example a box of toys? Personally if I overcharge I always send the buyer the overcharge back I do absorb the cost if I get it wrong and undercharge.

Some sellers just go for 2kg parcel post at £5.30 so if you had no idea of the weight would you be happy for the parcel to arrive with potentially £2.20 worth of postage?

If the package was over 25mm thick and over 100gm it would have cost them £2.20 or £2.70 for first or second class packet rate.
This might have been what they were working on then found out they could send it for less.

In these situations some sellers just refund the overpayment while others think, "they were happy with the postage when they bid so it's a bonus for me".

Sounds like your seller falls into the second category.

I recently estimated an item as a package and charged £2.70, but it went as a large letter @ 90p (1st class) - it must have been thinner than I thought.
The buyer gave me a 1* for P&P but I wish she had contacted me as it was an honest mistake and I had dropped it off with around 30 other parcels & had not noticed when I went back to pay the P.O. in the evening.

    Yes i would.:D
I would have worked out the total cost of the item including p&p,if it was a price i was willing to pay and if it was, i would have paid it.
I would only moan if the service class was different to what i had paid for.(paid for 1st class and received 2nd class)
Why do people get so annoyed with 'overcharged' postage? :rotfl:

Maybe because a) only one seller had what I wanted and
    b) from my end I wasn't sure if it was a LL or packet so trusted the seller knew it was a packet and P&P cost listed was appropriate- but it came through as a LL. Thus with a mark-up of £1.40.
