Long range cordless telephone with multiple handsets?

I am a technophobe, :o

We have a BT cordless telephone set with four handsets and an answer phone. They do not cover our whole house. The main telephone point that one must be plugged into is in the centre ish of the house but the house is a long L shape and it the far end is out of reach, As the far end in my kitchen that's a difficulty. I have an additional handset in the beginning of that room, where there is range, but at the far side there is not.

Are there longer range phones than standard? Do they come with more than four handsets? (four is adaquate, five would be better!)

No - the output is fixed and broadly the same on all DeCT handsets. To achieve greater distance, you need to have the base as high as possible, and well away from WiFi routers which create dead spots. You can also get a DECT repeater to act as a booster for the long part of your 'L'.

    Thanks.

I have now found a BT phone, the only one I can find, with a longer range (up to a km outside!) so I think thats what I might save up for. They are not attractive, but I will be able to answer my home phone while at work outside, so that seems ideal!
  • Most DECT phones have a range of 50m indoors and 300m outdoors and I very much doubt that your home is 50m at the furthest points. The walls and the amount of them could affect reception and so could how you have the base station located. Having it on the floor would get less range than if you put it on a high shelf. It might be worth doing some testing and adjusting the location to check how it affects reception. Dect phones usually have a signal indicator and sometimes an alarm when out of range so use those if available while testing. ;)

As they are DECT, you should be able to use almost any DECT handset with any other Dect system although special features might not be usable.

I have never liked BT cordless phones because they are usually very limited in features, always behind other manufacturers. I like Gigaset phones, I have tried panasonic but wasn't that impressed.
  • You can buy dect repeaters. Never used one myself but designed to extend the signal range of DECT base station..

The DECT standard had no ability to provide connections 'up to 1 km outside'. An impossibility given the max output, and from BT? Even more incredible! I think you'll find the range is significantly less.

I am sure siemens have phones with extra long range available. Am researching phones at the moment and sure I saw something on a site called ligo or iligo or something similar which mentioned this. Sorry am being a bit blonde tonight as am on windows 8 and cant work out how to flick between 2 screens to check.

  • My Panasonic DECT phones (£7 a pair with answer machine on ebay a few years ago and worked faultlessly since) can reach around the house, right up the garden and halfway down our street.

Since then I've linked in other phones (all GAP compatible) so now I have between 5 & 6 phones around the house, depending on which one I forget to keep charged up :o.

So your problem really should be easily solved.

Can you get a signal booster? Or just run an extention to that other part of the home and have a second base unit there?
