Conservatory glass roof - cracking noises - is this normal?

Brilliant website - hope someone out there can help me with this one ...

We've just had a conservatory built - hardwood with double glazed glass roof and there are fair amount of cracking type noises as it heats up in the mornings and more so as it cools down in the evening. Not talking about the odd creak but loud cracking sounds.

Just wondering if this is due to poor fitting and may signify problems ahead, or is it normal and unavoidable?

If you have a glass/wood roof please let me know how yours is.

Thanks, IrisClara

    Hi

I imagine that this is due to thermal movement with the timber and glazed units and should settle down in the coming months. Have you spoken to the installers and voiced your concerns? Did they use a runner system for installing the DG units?

We have the same construction ,its been up for about 8 years and is south facing so it really heats up..We have not heard a peep out of it,unlike the upvc facias and gutters which creak and groan as they heat up.
The conservatory was designed and made by a local carpenter and I fitted it..
The glass panels are laid on a neophrene gasket which are stuck to the roof timbers then the capping is fitted on top which also has the same gasket.

It sounds to me that glass in yours might too tight in the frame or
What did they use as gaskets??

  • Thanks for your quick replies! The glazier says it is caused by the aluminium glazing bars (Lonsdale Thermgard), the technical department at Lonsdale have never heard of the problem.

There are some kind of gaskets within the Thermgard, but I'm not sure what they are made of.
