How far ahead to apply for new job.

Options
Ive been with my current employer for nearly 24 years - so havent got a clue.

I know Im out of work on 15th July 2013 - and will be paid up to that date. Im expected in work until 15th June, but can take employment in elsewhere in that last month should I wish.

so - given my availability to start a new job is 15th June, when should I start applying for new jobs?

You will have 12weeks statutory notice so can counternotice during the last 12 weeks(as long as you are on notice to terminate).

I would start researching now, get the CV up to date and reviewed.

look at the market for your kind of work or the work you might like to do.

Look for any training that could enhance your search interview skills.

I would probably start being more proactive March, April unless the market is flooded with your type of jobs.

With 24 years at the same company, you would be silly to walk away to a new job before collecting what should be quite a nice redundancy pay-out.
I would go with the advice from getmore4less with regards to when to start looking. Don't forget, you will have the option of stating on both the application form & at interview that you cannot start until July 16th.

  • Just in same situation. Redundant after 12 years @ 31st December but have known about it since Feb.
I called up about a few jobs Aug/Sept but was told by agencies this was way too early.I spent this time watching S1 jobs.com and perfecting my CV and covering letter. I had no idea how to go about doing either!! I went active November and have had 5 interviews. Been offered a job today starting January. What I have found is that a lot of jobs are fixed term contracts and that companies are using this as a "trial" period before going permanent , if permanent is even mentioned.
Use this time to prepare yourself for a possible unemployment period and reduce your spending accordingly....I wish I had done this now rather than sticking my head in the sand :o:mad::o

    Hope this helps.
