Transferring Car Insurance

Options
Hi Guys,

My Wife and I are buying a new car on Friday and are trading in our old car. Now the garage has asked for the cover note for the new car to start on Friday but we need to drive the old car down for the trade-in.

Now I was wondering about if we would be covered with the old car? My wife is calling her insurance company today to see her options but I was wondering if anyone else has any advice.

Thanks

You can ask for the insurance to change over at a certain time.

For example if you know that you are picking the car up at say 1 ask them to put the insurance on the new car for say 1:30 just in case you are delayed.

They will then send you out new cover details for the new car that you can present to the garage.

Only problem is you may have to sit around for a bit waiting for the insurance to kick in

I needed to do this a few years ago so the garage could tax the car for me.
I rang my insurance co and they sorted it so that I was unsured on both cars for that day.

Does your new insurance include driving other vehicles? If so can you transfer ownership of your old car on the Thursday and get your cover note to start on Thursday for your new car, this way you are covered in both vehicles (albeit third party only in your old car)

You cannot use doc cover on vehicles you own.

That's why I suggested transferring ownership the day before, the car dealer will then be the owner.

Any time we have traded in the insurance has covered both cars for the pick up day.

Why has the garage asked for the cover note to start whenver? I thought was up to the policyholder to arrange. The garage normally arranges the VED

The car dealer won't fall in with that plan!

They won't want the car to become "theirs" whilst the OP still has the keys and is driving round in it. They will want to give it the once over and get the keys before signing for it.

OP - if your old insurer won't permit any overlap, there is still no problem.

The insurer will ask what time the new car is to be covered from. Make sure the old one has been handed over by then.
