Grout Falling out from tiles near door

We have recently had our bathroom redone as a wet room. The room was stripped back, replastered, a new door way added, walls were tiled and anti slip flooring was fitted. We are now 2 months down the line and the grout between the tiles and the doorway has cracked and is falling out. Where the grout has cracked there is a crack that is the width of at least a £1 coin, the grout is so loose it just falls out if you press it.

We have already had the builder back once and he took the tiles off (breaking a few) and redid the tiles which were nowhere near as nice as when his tiler had done the job in the first place.

I am concerned that the the tiles over head near the door are unsafe if the grout is cracking/falling out. We really don't want to have to take the tiles off again if it can be avoided.

Does anyone have any advice or tips on what we can do to fix the situation?

Many thanks

The adhesive (if the correct adhesive has been used) is significantly stronger than the grout, which is there to fill the gaps not hold the tiles up. The problem is likely to be that the wall is flexing too much with the door opening and closing, causing the grout to come loose, it may also not have been out in deep enough, hence you being able to push it in causing it to fall out.

Get the builder to get the tiler back to correct the work.

I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • Thank you for reply Oli.s and Southcoastrgi, I will ring the builders and get them back again. I have had no experience of tiling before and was wondering why the grout was falling out, thanks for explaining Oli.s.
  • I wonder if you might be better off having a bead of silicone between tiles and door frame if problem persists?

Silicone should have been used, as doorframes will always move slightly.

Silicone should also have been used in the corners where 2 walls meet, and between the floor/walls and walls/ceiling.
Otherwise, expect those to crack and fall out as well.
