Copying DVDs

just downloaded free 21 day trial with Anydvd and Clone2dvd,

Anydvd worked as it should but a message came up.

The Acer Aspire laptop is about 5 yrs old and I have never bothered copying anything on the dvd writer, as I prefer my desktop to do this.
it has roxio creator inbuilt but original version 2009.

The message said Application probably requires Aggressive I/O Mode and I needed to enable this in Anydvd programme setting if I was using Roxio.
which I wasn't.

When you browse for the dvd in your c drive there is an audio file and a video file, wasn't sure what to do so just chose the video file.
The copy is perfect but will not play on either computer or on my TV/DVD set.
It will only play on my main video player/recorder.

I know it could be the blank disc so can try another one, but I am puzzled about the audio file, this is showing empty so why was it created?

I used Clone dvd years ago and am sure it wasn't this complicated!

Can't help specifically with the software you've chosen, but I find DVDfab easy to use - try their free trial & see what you think?

    Roxio is garbage.

Get VLC or Windows media player to play DVDs.

    I can recommend DVDFab too.

There's an audio folder added as it goes back to when DVD was invented. Crazy Sony and Philips not only wanted 15 separate DVD regions in Europe they also had it in their heads that the audio would be in a separate file system.

When they didn't get their way they threw their dummy out of the pram and made up their own 'DVD' system which until very recently was not officially a DVD®.

Bin Roxio. Maybe less crap than it used to be but it's still pants. Good free burner http://www.imgburn.com or the less complicated (perhaps) http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nbl-free.php

    Simple DVD player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

    WMP Windows 7 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16546 or XP http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8163

And use good quality blank discs like http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000BEZYLA

    It's not complicated

Select "Clone DVD" - Clone a DVD including all title and menus.
Then select the DVD drive & next the chapters you want, on the next page select the audio & subtitles you want then on the next page select the DVD writer, write speed & then go

Or just get DVDShrink http://www.filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/ which still works with many DVDs (oe any if you rip them with a new program like mentioned).

It simply shoves all the selected files (and shrinks to a single layered DVD) on to your Desktop then drag those files (or burn them) to your burner app.

No need for VIDEO_TS or AUDIO_TS.

Never used them, Just get the contents out of VIDEO_TS.

DVDShrink is also great for simple editing and checking a DVD really meets the DVD standard (you you don't start blaming th eplayer, burner or discs), If it rips and rerips it's a real DVD.
  • Thank you to all who replied.
I think I complicated matters by mentioning Roxio.
    I've never used it anyway.

I always use Windows Media centre if I watch a DVD but I very rarely do

What I still can't understand is that the Audio-TS file is empty although the dvd copied perfectly from the Video-TS.
Looking at Jemma T's reply it looks like it is automatically there even though its not needed.

Still fed up that the video will only play on 1 out of 4 dvd players.
it won't even play on the computer I copied it on although it is telling me what is on the files.
first try will be another disc, I've used Maxell DVD-R, which I always use to record T.V. programmes.

Then other options everyone has kindly offered.
    There's certainly plenty to try.

AUDIO_TS will nearly always be empty.

If you still have problems I'd really look at the media and then work your way through what people have said.

If DVDShrink can rip your working DVDRs (DVD-R or DVD+R?) then -again- media or perhaps your DVD burner -or something in the background causing your burning to fail momentarily (= bad copy = DVDShrink won't open it).

Maxell are OK in Poundland or a petrol station at 2am but if you want to figure this out get the media right first. And a couple of DVDRWs (rewriteable) won't go wrong so you can keep testing without wasting -R media. These will do: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321020370369

A new burner (£15 or so) may fix things and save you pulling out your hair.

    Just work through it.
  • Thanks Jemma,

I've never burnt on the laptop before so it could be that, unfortunately the burner in my desktop has gone weird so can't use that.

Tried again earlier with a Tesco DVR-R which has a lower speed 8x but once again the copy will only work on my Panasonic player/recorder in the living room.

I have got some rewritable discs so might have another go on those.

The discs you mentioned certainly have got good reports on Amazon.

I hate not knowing why things don't work:mad:

Yes, technology can be like that :)

If stuck it's always best to start afresh which might mean investing in a decent burner for your PC or a separate burner you can move around like: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005N2UE2O (choose Amazon from the right hand column if you prefer them). Read the reviews.

I'd say hold off on the desktop internal burner because it could be something worng with how it's set up (channels) and the same problem may be there on a new burner. The external burner should bypass that.

Getting good discs is always the important bit and as much as I like Tesco's cornflakes I would not darken their door for DVDRs

Only other thing is updating your kit where possible so that external burner may be an almost pain free option. Depends how much burning you want to do and how important not having a headache is!

There's lots of info missing for people to determine the problem (age of equipment/operating system/USB speed (external will need 2.0) etc) although the answer should still be in this thread. I wouldn't go fiddling with disc speeds just let your software decide to see how it gets on.
