claiming on travel insurance after expiry?

I suspect this may be a lost cause, but....
At the end of the Summer 2012 we booked a flight for early Jan 2013. In Sept, my wife was taken ill and diagnosed with a brain tumour. Our annual multi-trip travel insurance was up for renewal in November, but the insurer refused to renew and cover my wife's condition. We have been looking for alternative insurance to enable us still to go away, but have now found out that my wife needs surgery this week so travel in early Jan will not be possible.

The question is - are we still able to claim back our flights on the insurance policy which our insurer refused to renew? The policy was valid at the time we booked, and it was their decision not to renew in the interim due to illness we could not have foreseen.

Any advice would be much appreciated....many thanks.
