Post Office Credit Card Application

1 week ago I made an application for a Post Office credit card on-line, today I received a letter via post, which states I have previously applied for a Post Office credit card, to which I assume my application has been rejected.
I have telephoned the Post Office, who have advised me that there has only been 1 application for a card & the letter must be a mistake, I now have to wait a further 5 days for them to do some digging.
My question relates to the letter received in the post, basically is it designed to strike fear into the recipient, by telling them to contact Experian or the Fraud Prevention Service, wouldn't it be better for the Post Office to talk to me direct?
I have looked at the Experian web-site, can anyone advise if you can get a 1 off credit report? and not the trial 30 day type.
Please Note I am fully aware of the Post Office & Bank of Ireland and have never had any dealing with either to my knowledge.
Thanks for any advice regarding the credit report.

No.
What does the letter say? Is it saying that if you didn't make a prior application, then to check your credit reports? If so, then that is as much as they can do - they won't provide you with details of any application made in your name.0 -

Well I got my Experian Credit report today.
Shows I have never previously had a Post Office or Bank of Ireland credit card.
Rang customer services to give them a kick up the rear, got an apology and lots of waffle, now they are going to look at my application again.
I wait to see...........0
