Get away from Solid Fuel (Help)

Hi All,

At the moment I have solid fuel heating (2 bed house) running at cost of £80 a month in the winter and £30 to £40 in the summer with a hit of not much hot water in the summer.
I can't have a oil or LPG tank as the lorry wouldn't reach our house as a good bit away from the road and I have no drive :(

I have had a engineer out to get a price for LPG heating with cylinders but have been told its very very expensive to run :cry

Does any one know ruffly how much I would use a month in LPG ?? or have any more ideas ??

Thanks

How far is it? And did you get one of the oil companies to confirm this? As I know they do have LONG hoses meaning they can be quite a good bit away

You can always site the oil tank nearer the road and have a longer supply pipe to the boiler.I thinks there may be limits to the size of bore but the oil deivery companies should be able to help with this.

Another option is to have a filling point nearer the road with a pipe leading to the tank. The site will also affect what is possible as oil needs to flow by gravity to and from the tank, so the filler needs to be above the tank and the tank needs to be above the boiler.

The problem with LPG seems to be that one company will not fill another's tank so you can't shop around for prices.

Have you ever seen an instalation like this ?because the speed at which tanks are filled via a 3" delivery hose and shut off valve which do not have a sealed connection but just entered into the filling hatch on the tank would make this very unlikley as an option for domestic instalations as a gravity fill would be impossible via a hose ..apart from the physical difficulties of it Can you imagine the red tape and enviremental issues involved in having a large pipe full of fuel oil sitting perminantly beneath ones propperty.

The only time I've seen this was at a house at the bottom of a valley with the road on the hill side above and there was a considerable drop down to the tank. I imagine it would have to be filled fairly gently.
  • thanks for reply but that doesn't look like an option :(

I guess I'll have to keep coal :( till i move

£80 a month sounds like a bargain to me!

(we have storage heaters, but decided that the cost to replace them would take years to pay back due to rising oil prices)
