E.On to pay compensation to overcharged customers

Found this and thought it might be useful/interesting. E.On are paying compensation to customers who were overcharged when they left the company. On average it is only £14.83 per person so not that much, but could be an extra Christmas present!

    Hi LillaLoves

This refers to customers who switched supplier following prices increases in 2008 and 2011.

After a price increase announcement, customers need to tell us by the date of the actual increase of their intention to switch supplier.

We then need to hear from the new supplier within 15 working days of their intention to take over the account.

In these instances, customers leaving will not be charged the new rates.

Regrettably, following the price increases in 2008 and 2011, there were a number of customers where we wrongly charged the new rates even though they had correctly told us of their intention to leave because of the price increases.

We've identified those customers affected, apologised for our mistake and paid back the money owed, including interest.

Also, we've improved our systems to stop this happening again.

As we've recently announced a price increase to take effect on 18 January 2013, I thought it worth highlighting this again.

If any of our customers are switching supplier because of this increase, please let us know by or on 18 January 2013.

We've installed new software so we can record this intention to leave. These accounts will then be flagged to make sure we don't charge the new rates to customers who've let us know their intention to leave within the correct time frame.

This applies to customers with credit meters. Prepayment customers leaving because of the increase will still not be charged the new rates but it will be handled differently. If I might explain.

Because prepayment prices are updated via a universal message sent electronically to all meters, the new rates will register on the meter. In these instances, prepayment customers will receive a rebate following their change of supplier.

Hope this helps anyone switching supplier because of the price rise. If anyone needs any more info just give me a shout as will be happy to help.

I'm a former E.on customer affected by this who had an energy Ombusdmsan case at the time and the report/final decisions didn't even pick this up. Useless.

    Hi cing0

I'm sorry you were affected by the overcharge when switching supplier in 2008 or 2011.

Customers affected have been identified and cheques are going out this month to compensate.
