Car insurance cancellation fee

Regarding my car insurance, I have just changed from Churchill to Swift because the premium was over £350 less. I called up Churchill to cancel and they're charging me 1 months insurance PLUS the number of outstanding days left for my final month. I pay about £100 a month with them for my insurance and it's costing me £140 to cancel!!!!
So instead of having a set cancellation fee they base the fee on your premium.

Does anyone know if it's possible to claim these fees back like you can with bank charges?
I just think it's a ridiculous amount to have to pay just to cancel your insurance. It annoys me because these companies are performing daylight robbery and have you by the testicles!

Car insurance companies are within there own right to charge to cancel as you taken out a 12mth policy which you have broken. You can't claim any charges back as they would be laid out in your policy documents.

Yep that's always been so but who knows, it might change one day soon .... until then ....

Try contacting Swift and say ever so sorry but I got the dates wrong by a month .. I am still insured by Churchill! Could you please restart the new policy in a month? Offer to fax your existing certificate as proof. You never know, you might be able to do a deal.
