Fraudulent direct debits being set up in my name.

Hi folks,

Just over 2 years ago I had a little acount I used for cashback websites daily clicks that kind of thing.

I stopped doing the clicks but some time later started getting a lot of direct debits set up in my name for all kinds of things, even cat insurance, even one that wanted to charge me £28 for a loan application. A real nuisance having to ring up every company who sent me a direct debit to get it cancelled and annoying as well.

Went to police and bank who closed the acccount down, and gave me a new one.

Today I got another letter subscribing me to Marie Claire magazine, rang and got it cancelled.

As no money can come out of a closed account anyways should I actually take the trouble to ring up and cancel any further direct debit letters that I get subscribing me to services?

its just annoying but can't let this get to me, as its a low level crime police are not going ot be interested anwyays.

Just have a feeling it has to be one of the cashback sites that I had signed up to who are doing this.

If it was you what would you do?

Contact bank to request full and immediate refund of all DDs taken in error - see the Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme.

Ask bank to block the creation of further DD mandates from that company.
If they say they can't do this, close the account immediately and switch to a better bank.

Thanks for replies, just a bit worried in case there are other ways that they might set up things in my name like get a loan or maybe something else.

I rang the company today but they said that they can't tell me how the person who set up direct debit set it up online or by telephone etc.

Maybe a cashback site owner gone bad or a call centre trying to meet targets are my own guesses but who knows.

Just hoping I don't get a deluge of mail over the coming days of the same kind.
