Notice Period

Hello again,
I am currently off work sick and as of today have handed in my notice to help care for my disabled son and upcoming disabled daughter. Should I ask for the notice period to be reduced, as I believe I would be better off claiming IS rather than SSP, or are they likely to reduce the notice period of there own accord? My notice period is 10 weeks, I am unlikely to be fit to return back to work before this period.
