Door to Door Christmas Carols Etiquette??

This is exactly why I always check who's at the door before I open it. TBH, I very rarely open it. Two old women were on my doorstep yesterday morning, no chance. This is exactly why I don't answer withheld numbers or 0800 etc, I'll regret it if I do0

Not that they needed to do much knocking, everyone would hear the singing and come out anyway. I haven't seen them for the past couple of years, so I assume that they don't it anymore. That was lovely, especially when DS was small, it was the highlight of his night and it always put me in the Christmas mood!
Rotary Club was collecting in my neighbourhood last night. Alas, I was struggling with the kids (bedtime routine) when they knocked on the door and only had time to shove something in the tin before rushing back upstairs. We could hear the music for ages though.0 -
I got caught out by a carol singer last night! First one we've had in at least 10 years - we just don't usually get them. I normally ignore the doorbell around this time of year, just in case - but I was expecting a washing machine delivery!
I opened the door and there was one girl there, maybe 10 or 11 years old, with a chap - presumably her dad - waiting by the gate. She launched into the usual "We wish you a merry Christmas". I stood there for a few seconds feeling rather uncomfortable - are you supposed to listen, or do they want you to give them something immediately so they can leave?
Anyway, I nipped into another room (just as she switched to "Jingle Bells"), grabbed £1 and gave it to her. Don't know if that was a bit generous, but I was happy to take a hit on this one, safe in the knowledge I won't get caught again!0 -
If they came to my house they wouldnt get out even if I wanted too dont have any spare cash around. I pay by debt card for goods only time I dont pay that is cheque to window cleaner. I doubt a young kid would understand if older probably wouldn't believe me but its true. I use to keep spare cash in a jar but no longer0
