Hi all, I have been given an old sideboard and I didn't realise until I got it home it has a distinct smell of urine. I have wiped it down with a wood cleaner but am worried about getting it too damp because the veneer is already bubbling on one door
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the smell? My dining room wreaks of it now and I'm not sure what to do.
Any advice greatly appreciated

I have an idea that it may be the actual glue that is sticking down the veneer. Sometimes a glue made from fish products was used and it does give off a whiff of pee!
can you bung a few pots of pot pourri in it? also dust down inside all surfaces with bicarb? The item could be reacting to a change of temperature and humidity and once it 'settles down' the smell will go away.
in the meantime you can only mask it - so as many 'nice' smelly items as possible in and around it!!!!!!!!0 -
If you don't want to get it damp, I'd go with bicarbonate of soda. Sprinkle all over and leave for a day or two to absorb smells.
If that's not enough, wiping it down with a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice may help.0 -
Hi, thanks for your answers. I've been on my hands and knees and had a good sniff and found that it does not smell inside and there's no smell around the legs etc... I then found where the smell was coming from - one drawer has a lining, which has obviously been glued in, and it was this that totally stank. I have soaked it with a biological wash power mixed with warm water and have managed to peel most of the lining off. It's still a bit whiffy but I'm hoping once it dries out it will be fine. xI must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:0
