Engine Blow!

Hello everyone. I am new here, and am in need of some major advice.

I recently bought a second-hand car for work on hire purchase from a dealer, and the engine died last weekend. The garage in currently in talks with the car warranty company(autoprotect) to sort out what going to happen with the car. The mechanic has let me know that they will probably write it off, as it would be too costly for autoprotect to replace/fix the engine.

I have not notified my insurance company, or the dealership yet. Was this a mistake?

Ultimately my question is where does all this leave me? I don't have the money to buy another car or pay to the quoted prices the mechanic gave me to replace(£12,000) or rebuild(£7200) the engine.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the price of a brand new engine. You need to start hunting around salvage yards for one that came out of a rear ended car. It will cut your price significantly.

Gotta be honest though, I'm surprised at any Honda engine dieing as they're usually pretty solid.
  • back to the dealer and reject it as not fit for purpose under the sales of good act.

let the dealer sort this out any problems contact the finance company because its in their best interests.

dont have to notify the insurance company its not been in accident.

    this is majour mechanical failure.

    Yep, looks like a bargain.

Trouble is it will likely cost another £10k at least to get that petrol VW engine to work in the OP's diesel Honda car :D

£7.2K to recon a 2.2 diesel engine is lunacy of the worst order. I know someone who bought a reconditioned Ferrari 348 engine for half that.

I'd have to say that there was probably something wrong with the engine when you bought the car - either that or the OP removed the sump plug and took it for a drive.

The 2.2's in the Civic are under tweaked because they're so quick, it makes it difficult to sell the Type R.

If its a 2009 car, is it not still covered by the original warranty? Get back to the dealer immediately! Even if slightly out of warranty, the engine should not blow up on you at this age contact Honda customer services if you have a problem with the dealer.
