Marks/damage to kitchen worktop

I have black shiny marble look worktops in my kitchen. Don't think they are granite, probably laminate.
I'm not the best housewife in the world  but today I cleaned the worktops. I've found several parts, one quite large, several other smaller ones, where my black worktop is now more of a grey/white. These patches also feel rough. At first I thought something had spilled on there without me noticing and had dried up. However, it won't clean off and I think that somehow something has happened to take the shine and colour out. There were some cleaning products on them on there but none of them appear to have leaked so I am totally mystified about what could have happened.
Am I just going to have to live with these marks or is there anything that anyone can suggest that might get rid of or improve them and not make the damage worse?
Worse case scenario I am thinking I will replace the glass worktop saver with an non transparent one and try to forget the marks are there!
Any advice would be really appreciated.

It sounds like it might be heat damage. The glass saver seems like a plan!0

I don't think it is heat damage, although that seems the most obvious explanation. It's not very close to the oven and I am careful about not putting hot pans etc directly on to the worktops.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
3 options:
1) Disguise as you have indicated
2) Call in somebody like the 'Magic man' who repairs laminate worktops, ceramic sinks etc.
3) if they are heat marks, claim for a replacement on your buildings insurance (assuming you have accidental cover)Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
