Problems with Windows Movie Maker

I have downloaded some video from my DV Camera from tapes onto the computer and have placed it in Movie Maker intending to write it to CD once edited. Unfortunately it always crashes. Suspecting it may be my computer I took the hard drive round to a mate's house and tried it on his but Movie Maker kept freezing. Is this a common fault and if so can it be rectified? Thanks
