Some good discussion going on, but all things considered it appears that the Jules Verne trip is reasonably priced and the company seem to get favourable opinions. For our first trip I think we would feel more comfortable taking the JV choice, if we enjoy the country then we can always go back and do it ourselves next time (something we do a lot around Europe).

One other thing is the time of year...I've had a couple of people telling me that July/August is a bad time to go!! Problem is that my partner is a Teacher so we have to go during the UK Summer holiday period...any thoughts?

Thanks again for your replies and help.

Oh - it's hot and horrible in Delhi anyway.

I got heatstroke their in July, the only time in my life. It was 120 F though, and streets were flooded.

I'd rethink your strategy - unless other people say differently!

If you've never been to India before, I'd take the organised tour.
India can be done on a pittance by train and private car when you know what you're doing, but it's a real culture shock the first time.
It will be incredibly hot and sticky in July, but you might get some great dawn / dusk colours at the Taj. Few days to acclimatize and you'll be OK.

If you can do it, post Xmas is a good time to go, or an early Easter one year even better. Don't forget the VISA.

Thanks for the advice everyone...it might be possible to do next Easter as my partner gets a couple of weeks off for that...
