P87 help....

Hello,

Hoping someone here can answer my question please...

My work currently pays 35p per mile for business travel in my own car, I have heard if I get a P87 form from HMRC I could get money back from the mileage that I have already claimed this year, is this correct? or have I just got confused somewhere??

Thanks in advance :)

Can you use this form for fuel? The 35p per mile paid to you should have been subjected to tax deduction anyway.

Just to clarify for you, how it works is like this, the Goverment set a p/mile rate if your company pays less, then with the P87 you can claim the tax difference between the Gov set rate and your employer rate.
You can claim back as far as 3 years, subject to having the relevant P11 milage statements. You cannot claim for 2012-13 as you don't have the statement yet.
  • Hi,

Thanks DUTR, how do I obtain a p11??

Your company will supply that, ours are on the system to download and print off if required.

    No it shouldn't.

It's a reimbursement of expenses not income.

Correct, as long as the price per mile you receive does not exceed the appropriate limit laid down by HMRC. If it does exceed it, you are liable for tax on the excess, but I think this would be done via tax return, not PAYE.

Which it is in this case as long as the OP doesn't exceed 10000 miles in the tax year.
