Tax Return for Partership for last year, when it only started this year!!! Why???

So as the title says;
We started our partnership May 2012, before this it was a sole trader business (we have done our 2012 tax return for this)
But now we are advised we need to do a 2011/2012 tax return for the partnership that started in May 2012.
Surely we should only do this in 2012/2013 and NOT 2011/2012?
Any explenation please???

Who has advised you that? Sounds like they just have the wrong information about when you started the partnership.0
-
It stated it on the forms sent to use by HMRC, I.e. you must complete your partnership return for 2011/2012 by Jan 2013.0

Just write back to HMRC and state that your partnership started in the current tax year.0

So do you think we are correct in saying it shouldn't be completed until the year in which it started LOL. I know it seems mad, but I was thinking I must have missed some technical rule !!! :-/0

There would be nothing to fill out a return about if it covers time BEFORE your partnership, so yes there must a be a mistake somewhere.0

Exactly what I thought, at least now I don't think I'm going mad! Thanks0
