Can i NOT claim JSA?

Ive been made redundant and am unable to sign on for several weeks (assuming i dont find work in the meantime) due to me currently living off notice pay. My wife is working part time but enough hours so we can still get tax credits. We rent our property so obviously we will have to claim Housing benefit.
I dont particularly want to sign on even though i will be entitled to contribution based JSA due to paying NIs for the last few years. I always feel the Jobcentre is just there to shove you into any job they can find and the pressure is enormous. I feel much more confident going about looking for a job myself. I am also considering training or going back to college part time and i have found the jobcentre more of a hinderence than a help while i have tried to improve my qualifications etc so to not have them on my back would be a plus.
My question is can i avoid claiming JSA by instead just using my wifes income to claim tax credits, housing benefit etc? According to the calculator i can also claim income support. How can that be?
It might only be a temporary measure so would i be able to if i needed to go and claim JSA in say 3 months time if im still out of work? Or do i lose that right?
Any help appreciated.

If you have any payment protection insurance policies on credit cards or loans etc you must claim JSA for these to take effect. It is worthwhile claiming the £56 a week even if to keep your NICs up to date.0

any insurance policies etc. Im more or less debt free bar tax credit repayments. It is only a possible temporary measure while i get myself sorted. I just wondered if it was legal to do and if i would cause me any problems if i later decided to claim it.
As for national insurance does it really matter?0 -
You have the choice to claim JSA or not....nothing states you have to. Hopefully you will be in employment before too long. I guess that's what thousands say !
As for NI stamps, again, thats a choice.... in later years you may not need the stamps but who knows what the value of the state pension will be when you reture.0
