The rucksack project

Options
Details can be found at the title above .org or on Facebook

It involves going to a charity shop and purchasing a backpack, sleeping bag (or blanket I guess) warm clothing and food.

You put it all together and go out and find a homeless/rough sleeping person and gift it to them.

My hubby and I are putting together three or four right now. There by the grace of god go I and if I were out there in this weather...

    I have found that the only way is via Facebook ...

    Also note
    ***The Rucksack Project is NOT a registered charity and does not accept donations or any kind. It is a movement - an idea and The Project is simply a way to spread the message of that idea to as many people as possible in the hope that other individuals like myself will make their own direct donation to a homeless person.***

    I shall therefore have to ask the Forum Team to take a look, as appeals are normally limited to registered charities.

    Rather than driving around harassing rough sleepers (how do you know what size clothes they take/whether they have a rucksack etc anyway?), have you considered making a donation to your local homeless charity instead?

    This idea is all a bit too Lady Bountiful for me...I'll stick to letting the professionals spend my donations.
    import this
  • Um you GIVE them the rucksack. Single men tend to be ignored by the council in terms of help available. I just bought large sizes as these will fit smaller men.

    I already give to charity this is a hands on and personal approach. I certainly feel more connected to the giving than dropping a can in a food collection bin or money in a tin!

    There was also a post on the Facebook page from a lady who thought it was a fine idea, but why did people feel the need to publicise what they were doing, including taking photos and posting them on Facebook? I had some sympathy with her ...

    I was glad to see that one of the local charities was involved in some way with the Bristol Flashmob event on Sunday, but feel there may be some unintended consequences, and will watch with interest ...
