Council Tax on Inherited Empty Property (For Sale)

  • I had a empty, no furniture house one call to my local Cheshire council and they told me I did not have to pay was absolutely made up!

    Knock another 10k off and get your agents to work harder. Consider multi agency approach.

    Speak to the CAB and see what they can do to help.
  • I'm in the same situation with my late mothers house. It's uninhabitable, will cost too much to fix up to rent out and is worth barely half of it's full value and I'm paying council tax on a property that can't be lived in! Seriously tempted to just sign it over to someone else and let them have the hassle of it!

    my Dad worked hard for that house and ultimately its my kids inheritance.

    This is immaterial to the case -it would appear that the CT is due and payable.

    Have you asked the Council about a payment plan?

    Have you asked the estate agent about attracting a buyer who can proceed with a quick purchase?

    WhY don't you auction it ?

    If it's worth double the price once someone has spent a ton of money and time on it…so what ?

    Hi there, this is exactly the position I was in a few years back. Like you I could not understand the rules as I was getting the 25% discount for single occupancy yet no discount on a property with no one there.

    I bit the bullet and rented out, so far so good, I have good tenants and the rent provides an income whilst I retain my asset. I have to say this was never in my scheme of thinking but I didn't want to let my inheritance go for a song.

    Good luck whatever you decide, just a quick note I have recently found out that the Council Tax exemption on rented property is only a month!

    The original post was around 2 years ago, was bumped by someone else today.

    I myself are in the exact same boat now, was told that I wouldn't have to pay a penny, then yesterday (18/4/15) I received a council tax bill for this year but also want me to pay for last financial year but have received no letters apart from this one, am disabled on benefits and trying to sort this mess out on my own as there is no one else to help me, my mums house is up north and I live down south, so travelling is expensive too!! Been told by the EA to unclutter it which am trying to do but hard because of my illness and being alone, also no money to pay anyone to help me! Still have family pet in the house so heating has to be on, also what money there was is virtually gone due to having to pay bills of gas and electric!! So where am going to get £1446 from I don't know, so am going to contact CAB tomorrow and see what can be done! So I have so much sympathy with you all whom are in the same boat,as I know what your all going through, cos it does take the mickey
