benefit question/help ?

I am a single mother and since Xmas I have been on Income support and housing benefit/council tax benefit.

The question i'm asking is that my boyfriend comes round to see me often/stays over etc but he in know way lives there/has his stuff there. I pride myself for budgeting for my bills and pay them all myself.

One of my rather rude neighbours has accused me of having him living there which is far from it and has really upset and distressed me. We are not ready to live together and how we are at the moment is great. I suffer quite badly from SA and Its making me feel really down and feel sick with worry.

Am I not allowed visitors!! ??

  • Yes, you are allowed to have visitors. If he does not live there then you needn't worry.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

You can do without neighbours like that,I asked the DSS a similar question a few years ago and was it ok for my boyfriend to stay over 3 nights a week and they said as long as he,s not living their and keeping his stuff in my house it,s fine it would put your mind at rest if you just gave them a call. you dont have to give the correct name you just want anonymous advice, speak to income support.Your not doing anything wrong so dont let your neighbour intimidate you.

This is actually a very grey area, what it comes down to is whether 2 people live together in the same way that a husband and wife might (or a civil partnership couple)....

now, that might seem simple, but some married couples have seperate beds, seperate finances etc.
Some couples "live together" but the hubby stays away for weeks on end and just comes back every few weeks (oil rig workers? armed forces?).

There are lots of factors to consider - shared finances, shared meals, social time spent together etc etc. One thing they cannot use is *sex*. They donlt ask about it, don't record volunteered info on it (afaik).

And the decision is made "on the balance of probabilities".

If the OPs b/f has his own home/place which is his normal place of residence then they'll prob be fine, but from my own experience, I moved in with my (now) wife over a gradual period - I couldn't say from when we were "living together" (both working anyway, so it wasn't an issue), but I still had my own home all the time.
  • I would NOT even worry, because I have a family memeber who IS living with a relative of mine as a couple would in every way do!, yet she is claiming single parent tax credits, and before this claimed single parent income support, and even though I have on 2 occassions rang the beneifit fraud line, she still is in reciept of these beneifits, and still lives a luxury lifestyle because the partner ( my relative) runs a very succsessful buisness, begs the question do they actually do their jobs in the goverment, which I dont think they do, too many people I know claim single person beneifits yet have partners, just shows the state of our beneifit systmes really doesnt it, and us tax payes foot the bill, theres a word for that, "Shafted" by our own lovely goverment....
So dont worry, because people who are actually committing beneifit fraud are getting away with it, as long as what you say is true, you wont have any problems.
  • davesgirl, welcome to the forum.

Martin asks if we wish to discuss Benefit Fraud to do it on the Discussion board, not the Benefits board. This board is to help people get their correct benefits.

  • Thanks for your advice everyone, I feel alot more positive now.

Yes he has his Own Property. I have not claimed benefits before and it was all really overwhelming for me... When my plesant neighbour made her accusations I was horrified, and it was in front of my 12 year old daughter to:mad:

Davesgirl97 that must be very frustrating for you, and can totally understand where your coming from.

    Thanks again all x
