Wow, what a find, well done to all of the people involved in the work on this find.

I am no historian but found myself getting a bit emotional watching this unfold on the news today, what a softie!

He will be buried in Leicester Cathedral.

When I first saw this thread title, I thought it was about dog fouling.

  • Apparently the DNA comparison has been made with a direct descendent of Richard III's sister, Anne of York. I also thought that the Tudor's had no direct connection to the Plantagenet line, which is supposedly the true Royal lineage. Our current Royals trace back to the Tudors, so presumably the "real" line can be traced elsewhere - Another documentary coming up again, along with those that went before it!

It's a shame Richard won't be with his wife Anne Neville in Westminster Abbey (their son Edward is buried in North Yorks). Since the Conqueror only about 40% of the monarchs have been buried in Westminster, and in recent reigns Windsor has been the place of choice.

The Tudors descend from Edward III so yes they were of Plantagenet descent, but the last official Plantagenet was Edward Courtenay; his grandmother was a daughter of Edward IV. He was exiled to the continent and died in Italy in 1556.

If they manage to trace any descendants from the Anglo-Saxon line e.g. the House of Wessex outside of the Norman dynasty, I'd be interested. Edgar the Atheling was the brother-in-law of Henry I and was proclaimed but not crowned King; he was the last in the Wessex male line, but there's an odd mention of an Edgar Adeling in the Pipe Rolls from the mid 12th century, some 30 years after Edgar is said to have died. So who knows ... I find it fascinating.

Oh dear... He's going to find it difficult to put up the 'I was not the driver' defence on his POPLA appeal.

Shona will just point to the DNA evidence.

Excellent day for politics past and present. Skeleton in Leicester caprak confirmed as that of the late Richard III. Chris Huhne must have hoped that this discovery would bury his news!

I'm not sure what the fuss is all about, their are Richard III's in most car parks in London.
  • Roll on the State Funeral!

Experts I've heard talking about it today have said they are as certain as archaeologists can be that the remains are those of Richard III.

What a 'dream' he would have been for Atos: despite a badly deformed back, Richard was not only still able to work (as king of England) but be slain on the battlefield trying to defend his throne....;)
  • From what I have seen, early pictures of Richard with a hump back were originally showing him to be normal, the hump was later added along with modifications to the face. Later copies all followed what the doctored picture showed, along with an alleged charactor assination by Shakespeare.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
