Am after a timing belt change on my 2003 Audi A4 3.0 V6, and spoke ot my local independant Audi specialist and they want £860 to do it?? Seems expensive to me?

Anyone else? does it really cost that much? Car is probably only work £5k maximum :o
yep you have to remove the front of the car to get at the timing belt covers. Audis with engines in front of the front axle what do you expect

It's strange...the old inline 5 cylinder could be done without taking the front off, the later V6 (actually only 3 and a half cylinders long) needs the front taken off.

Suppose that's progress although getting the front off isn't that hard, it's just a bit scary the first time
  • like vaio said.

but i suppose it the newer version you have wich requires the front to be removed, this not hard but time consuming with bagging up, tagging clips and nuts and bolts storing up the bumper so it dont get damaged etc. its on avergage a good days to 2 days work depending on how many cars they have in.
  • 2 days?... I know the OPs A4s the 3.0 V6 but even so... Took me 6.5 Hours to do the swap on my B5 S4 I had and apparently that time is slow??.. Cost £280 for decent parts and Fluids...

I assumed the two days was the apprentice doing it although I think 6.5 hours is quite quick.

Don't suppose you are local to me and fancy a little private job? ;)

That's the audi tax. I bet the same style VW that uses the same timing kit will cost you £450 at the official dealer garage, and £320 at any independant garage.

they all share the same parts, I think when they had there own parts department for each brand you could go to skoda for your audi parts now its one big logistic thing called TPS, one parts desk for all brands

there wont be a mechanic constantly working on it if they are busy they will be doing other jobs that were in before you as well as wait for parts then there is all the checks. but that job should take no more then 1-1.5 days
