it's makes me sick to think that I can't go out have a drink or be to far away from home whilst on standby
While I do agree with you that they should be compensating you financially for giving up your time, the above bit got my attention.
It's one week in eight. That isn't a great deal really is it and most people spend at least one week in six at home doing not much (eg they've run out of money and are waiting for payday).
I've pretty much been out twice in the last SEVEN YEARS. I really don't see why you think you're being hard done by if you can't have a drink. There is an alchohol limit which still permits you to have a drink as long as you don't exceed the limit.
Seriously though, if the thought of having a quiet week in makes you feel sick, I think your problems are far deeper rooted than just a change of working terms at work.
At the end of the day the country is in the ****. Jobs are scarce, everyone is having to do things they don't like to survive. You at least have a half decent job - do you realise how lucky you are? You could be stuck in a old folks home wiping peoples backsides for a living. Seriously, I know you don't like the terms but you are a lot luckier than you realise and if you want to keep it that way, perhaps you should just get on with it.0 -

I don't often agree with TrickyWicky, and I probably wouldn't have put it quite like this (there are people who actually like working in care - and most of them are actually good at it and care about what they see as a vocation working with vulnerable people).... But I am surprised the sentiment hasn't been expressed quite so bluntly before now. There are times to pick your battles, and I am not sure that this is the time, nor the battle. Your union might achieve some sort of compromise on this - and that is the best you can hope for because the contractual term is clear. But what is the cost when it comes to the next round of redundancies and your score miraculously dips that one point too far? Or when the employer decides to be as assiduous about watching you as you are at watching them?0
