Help buying a new laptop for University.

Hi
I am looking to buy a new laptop for University.
I am doing my Masters and all lectures are online so I spend a lot of time on it.
I go into the library and we have a workshop once every 8 weeks so will take it in with me then.
I have no particular budget but would prefer it to be under £1000. A lot of the younger ones have the Apple ones - but I am not fussy what make/style etc as long as it does the job well
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Unless you really need a top of the range machine, you could cut that budget in 3, there are many similar threads with suggestions of what's around

What do you need it to do - what kind of Uni work do you do? Is it just a matter of using it for your online courses and word processing your course work, or do you need it to run Stats programmes (with large datasets), or to work with or create high spec graphics programmes or some other more specialist software?
If it's the former then you probably get away with spending a lot less, if the latter you might need to get a higher spec.0 -
Its in Criminology - so I basically need it for the on line lectures and word processing.
I have seen a few Toshiba ones around - I used to have one and loved it. So I should just go for the lower range then? No real benefits for paying for a more expensive one for what I need?
Spending a lot less is fine by me

Absolutely any laptop will do web browsing and word processing! No need to spend more than £400-450, assuming that you want no larger than a 15 inch screen for portability.
Just make sure that you get a decent processor (i3 or i5), decent amount of RAM (4GB minimum) and a reasonably large hard drive (500GB minimum). No free lunch, and no free laptop

Many thanks macman. Have noted all that down and am off late night shopping in a bit.
Many thanks - I am clueless when it comes to these things!0 -
Then don't go to PCW, because they are too...
You might still get one with Windows 7 on, if you don't want W8.
Much cheaper to buy online though. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks zenmaster!!! That has everything that macman suggested and so much cheaper than I expected!
Think this may be the winner
Am going to have a nosey round their shop - they have a number of good priced ones. 0 -
Just avoid buying one with Windows 8, stick to Windows 7.
Unless its a touch screen model. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
