Best value decking?

Hi,

Looking into the possibility of putting down decking over our exisiting tatty patio which is 18m3. The other option is re-flagging which we thing will be more expensive. Could anyone recommend any good suppliers of decking and/ or their thoughts on flags vs decking?

Thanks

In what way is the existing patio tatty?

Have you tried cleaning it with a pressure washer? Maybe that will revitalise it. Maybe it just needs repointing.

Flagstones versus decking is really a personal choice. Both can look really nice if done properly and regularly maintained. Flagstones need occasional cleaning. Decking needs to be weather treated and also cleaned occasionally.

If you do choose decking, go to a timber merchants and avoid the expensive DIY sheds.

Thanks - the patio slabs themselves are a dull grey colour and not very attractive at all - not something soap and water wil remedy. Can anyone give me an idea on costs for decking and flagstones on an area the size of mine?

They cost a bot more than some but the quality is excellent with a 25 year guarantee against rot with their patented formula.
You can 10% discount on order over £500 i believe.

It looks really good and I like the slightly elevated feel.

Edit: We live near their HQ in Kent so can vouch they are a decent company to order from.

If you have a Travis Perkins near you , they are very good value for decking boards and support timbers.
  • Watch the height of the decking !

Two properties near me have been ordered to remove it, because of planning issues
  • Decking every time, as soon as the sun get on it its warm which never seems to happen with paving.

I decked over our patio last weekend, not as big as yours - only 8.75 m2 but it cost about £350 getting the wood from Jewson and that was with a bit discount. It has made it much more usable and the kids love it!!

Do you know if they are York Stone? If yes, then they might be quite valuable. We bought a house with a York Stone patio and, when we extended the house and had to move the patio, we sold the York Stone slabs for far more than the cost of the replacement slabs. Ours were very thick and enormously heavy. I can’t remember the price we got as it was 20 years ago but it was a few hundred pounds for quite a small area.

If yours are just ordinary cast slabs, they aren’t worth much, but still worth recycling even if you give them away for free as then someone else pays for their removal. :)
