Im just about to send my initial letter asking for list of charges however (due to all the previous problems) I do not have a cheque book, should I enclose a Postal order or authorise them to deduct it from my current account?
Also (although Im jumping ahead a little here), I see that there appears to be a standard response from Yorkshire Bank of
- reply stating terms of contract etc,
- reply to 2nd letter offering a derisory sum and saying they will counter claim.
- reply to third letter offering 50%
Is it worth a try writing the claim letter telling them that Im aware they will come back to me in these ways and offer upto 50% and that I'm stating now I will not accept this and will be pushing for court action so they might as well save themselves the time and hassle of doing those letters.
Or do people think that could be counterproductive?

From memory Yorkshire bank were charging me on average 3 failed DD/ Cheque letters and roughly 15 to 20 days charges per month between 1997 and 2005. In total thats about £250 per month for 8 years. I did nothing about it

you can do either - i would ask them to debit your account that way you know whens its been done (dont forget to send recorded del)
i would go straight to the letter threatening court action (no point in letter 1 - like you say they give standard reply) - its very tempting to say "you know the crack so lets not play any games" (or words to that affect lol) however i would stick to templates on here which have proven sucessful and if we did state we knew the score they may then drag it on just to prove a point0 -

You need to follow the templates and timescales to show to the court that you have given the banks ample oppertunity to settle the claim. The letters are staggered in what they request and show a natural escalation of the claim so I would advise not to deviate from this process. Be patient and methodical and good luck
