Bank statements from 20 yrs ago

Hi all, sorry if there is info on this elsewhere, wasn't sure which forum bit to put it in. Is it possible to obtain bank statements from as far back as the early 1980s? And if so, how would I go about it/cost etc?

Thanks in advance.

I assume with the bank you're 'still with' yes ?

just pop in the branch and explain they must keep something on record ??

as for cost? depends on the pages? not by the 'age' - unless im wrong.

Hi Lith, yes with the same bank, they just say they only have the last 6yrs as not required by law to keep copies going further back. Would have thought it would be somewhere though.
  • It would be in the postal statement sent to you!

I know Lloyds can go back 10 years - that's it.

Why do you want them? (We may be able to come up with an alternative solution....if not, we're nosy anyway)

Its a question on behalf of a friend really so I don't want to say too much about his situation, but when his relationship ended his ex burnt all his paperwork that he wasn't able to take with him (had nowhere to move to just had to get out of the house) and now he needs the statements to prove he paid the mortgage all those years ago. He wasn't on the deeds as it was in her name, but he was the only one earning so took cash out his bank every month for her to pay the mortgage. She says she paid it, he needs to prove otherwise.....help....!

Gosh, that sounds terrible. He should just go to the bank and ask how can he get the proof. There has to be some kind of a record!

I believe its typically 7 - 10 years (minimum 6 years from the end of the financial year from what it relates) After that, they only need to record when the records were destroyed.

So I don't think you'll find your ATM withdrawals from 20 years ago.

If it is a statement from the mortgage the bank should keep records 6 years after the mortgage was settled so if its still active or was paid off in the last 6 years then he may be able to get it. I know they will keep the original agreement for this length of time so would assume they will keep the transactions also.

Ok thanks guys n girls. Just a quick query which I posted as another question in another section, but he was also guarantor on her mortgage and we were wondering if that would show up on his credit history?

Has he got a solicitor now? I wonder if it would be possible somehow for HMRC to confirm that he was working and she wasn't working or claiming benefit (or was claiming jobseekers etc) so that on grounds of probability he was paying the mortgage as she had no means to do so?
