When using a pesticide / insecticide look on the box / bottle etc for the word 'systemic' these products enter the plants system and kill the bugs etc that are feeding on them. So even those that the spray does not touch are killed.
These systemic products tend to last for up to 6 or 8 weeks.
Some of the cheaper products you are supposed to spray every 10 to 14 days !!!
So look for the words 'systemic'

    Thanks Mervyn, that's really helpful.
  • Calling Tine!!! So what is this wonder product called?!!
  • try this - my mum and gran have tried this on their rose bushes and their greenfly problem has gone away.

Plant a clove of garlic at the base of the plant affected. The clove will prbably spout and grow, but that's not the main benefit.......

The plant apparently absorbs the garlic flavour from the clove of garlic and exudes it in the sap that the greenfly munch on. The greenfly, on taking a bite of the plant, decide they dont like the taste of garlic and go and dine elsewhere.

I find it strange how they like some plants but not others - i found this morning the bottom few inches of my chives absolutely caked in young greenfly. there were so many of them, it gave me quite a fright, and made me feel a bit ill! I sprayed them with washing up liquid mix and wiped some of them off, hopefully this will help. They are in a window box with sage and rosemary and there isn't a single fly on those. i suppose its cos they are hairy / woody? Anyway i have moved this box away from the other one containing mint which they definitely DO like.

Thanks for all the helpful tips I know where to come will be back if the spray doesn't work! also thought it might be worth reviving this thread as its such a common problem, damn those little blighters!!
