Found share certificate, but company taken over

I was clearing out some papers the other day, when I found a share certificate.
I made some enquires and found that the company had been taken over a few years ago.
I didn't know anything about this.

I rang the new company and the person who answered said that the finance director was the one to talk to and that they would call me back.
This has happened twice now, with no call back!

What are my rights?
Is there another avenue I can pursue?

Rights come with responsibilities.

Which company do you have shares in, and which company owns it now?

All things being equal you will find that you now own shares in the new company.
