Crazy wine glass idea... boxes needed

I really am not keen on the wine glasses at our venue (they look like the G&T glasses in eastenders ! :rotfl:)

The venue is rustic and the plates and cuttlery wont be posh but its just something I am stuck on.

So I thought that it would look nice if we provided our own, not hired but bought glasses. Not cheap sets but crystal/antique style glasses from charity shops/friends etc, getting them cheap/free - incomplete sets etc. I have seen glasses in charity shops full sets for 50p each, they probably don't even put the individual ones out as normally people wouldn't buy them. I have set a budget of £100 for 100 glasses but really want to do it for much less.

2 things -
1 - Has anyone else done this/what do you think
2 - Anyone know where I can get cheap boxes to store them in, like the ones you get when you hire glasses.

  • The only way I can think of how you can store them is getting wine carriers from the supermarket and putting them in there?

Can't think of anything else for you sorry

How would you wash between drinks?

With a bar they obviously use a clean one each time. I like to swap and change drinks, and would need a clean one.

I'm not sure anyone would notice the glasses? i can;t say i ever have, could you maybe put the £100 towards wine for the glasses instead, with a note one the table along the lines of we know the glasses aren't up to much but I'm sure you don't mind using them to have a drink on us.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

local removal companies will sell boxes for glasses,or you could probably go to a wine merchant who may let you have some...dont forget that lots of places do offer a free glass loan service so its also worthwhile checking that out too.

    these type of boxes?

I have to say that potentially you are worrying a little too much over the detail....but I guess its your day and you are perfectly intitled to your opinion....Like others have said ive never really noticed the glasses for being not nice but I do notice if I dont like the contents....

I recently went to a wedding that was a tea party and the cups saucers and plates were only matched by a colour theme rather than everything matching....in this case it was blue and that was very pretty...im not sure how it would look if you had varying sizes and styles of glasses, or if you would end up with someone bemoaning that their glass was smaller than someone elses...I dont know

Probably if it were me I would be spending the money on a nicer wine to go into the glasses you are not so keen on and leave it at that.

It has got me thinking though...what does a g&t glass on eastenders look like.....

We won't have them behind the bar just at the sit down meal, in the evening we will use the standard ones they have there. we will then have bottles of wine on the table so hope. Hopefully with will be alot less that £100 and I remember going to a dinner party where all the glasses were different and thought it looked really pretty. I am not faffing to much about other details but for some reason I am on the glasses lol!

  • charity shops often have odd numbers of glasses the same style. it would be worth checking out antique second hand shops , amazon kitchen cok shop outlets, ebay and offlincences

Try a Wanted ad on Freecycle/Freegle and Gumtree.

Let the Charity Shops in your area know what you are looking for & give them your number, hopefully if any come in, they'll keep them for you.
  • My friend has spent the last year sourcing port glasses from charity shops for the sit-down meal so that everyone can toast the bride and groom andthen keep the glass they use as a memento. I made a small square "gift bag" for each one (using a range of similar but different card and ribbon chosen by the bride), and I used a range of charms from e-bay (one on each, chosen by me).

Anyone with half a crafting mind will be able to come up woth something for you :) They may have lost the will to live by the time they finish making them all, (from personal experience!!) so a nice pressie might be in order!

Your idea will work, and it will be fab :D

Bear in mind that the venue may well want to put all the glasses through their potwash beforehand as they will be serving drinks in them and need to ensure that their backs are covered in terms of health andsafety issues.
