Going on Holiday

espresso's point is that the timer overrides the stat, so if the temp drops below the level set on the 'stat, but the timer is off, no heat will be produced. Equally, no point in giving it 6 hourly 15 minute bursts if the temp is already warmer than required to cause freezing.
If it's going to freeze, it will freeze during the hours of darknesss.
Thank You , so perhaps better to leave heating on constant, set rads to 2 and thermostat 10 degrees.Do I need it or just want it.0 -
You haven't said if a frost 'stat is already fitted to the boiler, or available via the programmer menu.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Whats wrong with just letting the house go cold for a few weeks, I havent ever had central heating, like many others, and I survive just fine. All these old houses spent a good part of their lives unheated with no problems. I havent had a cold or flu in the last 10 years and am very healthy and fit for my years. today we all cossetted and overweight say the dieticians because of excessively heated houses etc
I have known houses whos pipes have burst in the middle of summer and absolutely wrecked the house, iwould nt trust the plastic plumbed pipes one bit, at least turn the water off at stopcock and have a worry free holiday0 -

On a day-to-day basis we never use the timer, just the thermostat.
Overnight and when we are out I turn it down low but when we get home I turn it up higher depending how cold it has been outside. We adjust the temp as we need to.DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024

Just fit a decent programmable thermostat and leave the boiler timer/control for heating set to continuous.
When we go away I set the number of days holiday and the "base temp" below which I don't want the house to drop. During the holiday the heating kicks in if it gets too cold and on the day we return, the programmer switches back to the usual programme for that day of the week and the house is warm when we get back.0
