JSA and sickness benefits

I have recently been made redundant, and am now claiming JSA and looking for employment. I may need an operation, and if I went under the knife during JSA, would I qualify for SSP, or will my family starve?

If you dont have an employer, I can't see how you could qualify for SSP

    How long is your recovery?

Here are the rules around JSA and illness

If you are too ill to sign on or meet the other job seeking conditions while you are claiming Jobseeker's Allowance, you should let the Jobcentre Plus office know as soon as possible. You can be ill for up to two weeks and still get the benefit. Also, you can be ill twice while you're unemployed and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance without it affecting your entitlement.
If you are unemployed for more than a year, you can be ill up to two times in each 12 month period that you're not working without it affecting your entitlement to the benefit.
If you are ill for longer than two weeks or more than twice during the year, you will no longer be able to get Jobseeker's Allowance. You will have to claim a benefit for sickness or disability instead.

The main alternative to JSA for those too sick to work is Employment Support Allowance.

I am waiting for an ankle fusion, very invasive surgery, as the first fusion did not work. I will be in plaster for 8 weeks, non weight bearing, plus a further 6 weeks in a support boot.

Surely your partner will provide for the family no?

She cares for our children, one of whom is disabled.

I have been reliably informed that once I step into hospital and go for my operation, I will be signed off JSA and signed on ESA.
Would I need to inform the Tax Credit Office and would it affect my Child Tax Credit award?
