Is a super-low mileage car a big consideration for me? I will stack approx 70k miles onto it over the next 2 years...
backs up the VAG 1.9 reliable.
I would go for something newer with higher miles say around 80k make sure the cambelt has been done and 2 years with another 70k will still be sellable.0 -
Good choice.0

I would personally only go with a 1.9 - the 2 litre unit hasn't the best reputation0

Thanks all, looks like i am going to look at 85k 1.9 octavias with a good history then. I will see i i can get one that isnt beige though...
Thanks again

With that journey my Mondeo diesel would easily beat 38mpg.
60MPG on the motorway at 70mph.
40mph with a gentle foot i have had over 67mpg.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
If the size of the car isnt too much of an issue and Octavia sounds good, you'll get a lot of Mondeo fans on here, so it's worth a look, and you should check the Accord. It's the best car I've had the pleasure of owning and driving (as an all rounder) and regularly moan at my wife to let me buy the new shape estate (she will only let me buy a civic as we dont need an estate)!
I had a 2004 Accord 2.2 diesel saloon that I bought for £5k in May 09 and sold for £5k in May 10. was gutted to see it go, extremely comfortable, a joy to drive, and the Honda 2.2 diesel engine is incredible. If you can find one with decent mileage I'd recommend having a look0 -
Go for something in rep-mobile territory, Vectra/Mondeo/etc..... Vehicles designed for fleet sales are infinitely more reliable than smaller hatchbacks, they have to be, the fleet market is extremely important to car manufacturers.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Sorry to resurrect a thread, but in my search for an octavia, I notice there is a superb. Same 1.9 engine, can get a newer reg and lower miles for my money as the depreciation seems higher on new ones.
What's the difference? Would this be a good option, as there seems some bargains....0 -

Missed this
the older superbs are only saloons, masive boot and ihgher spec than the octavia for same trim level.
You need to check it is dry one, they have issues with water ingress which can be troublesome.
if you can find an edition 100 fully loaded, we looked at a few but want/need a hatch/estate, the newer superbs come in a hatch but are still out of your price range.
with octavia and superb a few old taxis about with mega miles which says something about reliability..
worth a read here if looking at skoda
