Capital One charging me for free credit card

As the title says, I got a free credit card with Capital One a couple of years ago. They just charged me a fee, when I asked they said the card has a yearly charge.

I have the paperwork that says there was no charge, but they won't listen.

Is there anything I can do? They're just refusing to listen.

Follow their complaints procedure then complain to the FSA.
  • Exactly which version of their CC is it? Is this the first time they have charged you a fee, seems a bit odd as you say you've had the card for a couple of years.

If the fee is definitely for an annual charge and you have a letter stating the CC is charge free, rather than trying to explain this over the phone, perhaps you could send them copies of the statement and the letter by recorded delivery. Request a refund of the fee (obviously) and in addition another refund to cover your postage costs and inconvenience, perhaps circa £25.

Escalating it to the FOS may be more appropriate. The FSA don't deal with individual complaints.

Thanks, it's good to know there is a way to move this forward.

Looking into it I see they only accept complaints by post - http://www.capitalone.co.uk/support/contact-us.jsf (although they're happy to take other messages digitally, suits them I suppose).

I think I'd rather cancel my account, they've made it so much hassle to get them to put this right. I guess that's the intention. No such thing as a free lunch or free 1% cashback credit card, hey? :(
