Claiming compensation through insurance

We recently had a small leak in our converted basement, which was caused by a leaking pipe outside the property. Yorkshire Water repaired the leak, but left the hole unfilled in the road for five days. In that time we suffered torrential rain that filled the hole, and emptied itself in our basement. We spent two nights bailing approximately 500 litres of water out of our basement.

Yorkshire Water have sent a claim form to recover monetary losses for the repair work, but it tells us to submit the form through our buildings insurer. We were unsure whether doing so would affect our premiums, and if anybody had any advice.

Thanks,

Matt

  • That must have been miserable!

You're not obliged to claim through your building insurer, and your premiums are likely to rise. I'd be tempted to submit the claim directly to Yorkshire Water in this case.
