puppy vaccinations

My pup had her 1st vaccination with the breeder, I did ask if he could not do her but that was the only she would of had a vet check so he wanted to do. I would rather have had it done myself incase the vets used different vaccines, I was right. My vets do not use the same 1 and local vets do not either so they can not borrow one, so I was just wondering if anyone has had a pup done recently at a nationwide vets? If you have on the little sticker on the vaccination card does it say duramune? I would rather use my vets but am willing to travel to taunton, weston or surrounding areas. It has to be done on christmas eve so travelling to far may be a pain with the traffic.
Thanks

As far as I know the only reason a puppy needs two vaccinations is because the mother's antibodies can remain in the body for a while and nullify the effect of jab #1, but you don't want to wait until the age the antibodies are gone because it varies and pup might catch something before then. Therefore it shouldn't really matter what jab they use for the second one - it's not a course, e.g. part 1 and part 2, it's just readministering a second vaccination incase the first has been made void.
Not many vets will explain this though and often insist you have their "course" - I would be asking them to explain why it is so important to do it that way!
  • My vets are really good and thought they could borrow 1 of the vaccine off another local vets but none use it, they rang around to try and get it. I'm not sure why but the vaccine they use is not compatable with the Duramune one. They're not insisting I have a another full course but have said this is a option. I'm not happy to do that and told them I'm happy to pick up a vaccine from a vet locally if I'm allowed to do that, they're ring me back tomo.
I had to have my older girl redone when she was a pup, back then I just agreed but now I have read up alot about it since and do not really want to inject my pup more than she needs to be as it has been none to cause problems. I'll ask the vets why its not compatable as I do agree with what what your saying, if the second is just to boost the first why does it make a difference.

http://www.dogster.com/dog-health-care/dog-vaccination-schedule shows a vaccination schedule, and while it shows 3 boosters and includes rabies (US based article), it does show that the first three injections are for the same ting - DHPP.

I can understand them possibly being worried about interactions if the timeframe between jabs is short but they should explain this to you. I always ask my vet why they advise things the way they do - my vets are great and often expand on things because they know I actually want the information and will try to grasp what I can (studied biology and chemistry at A levels so have a little bit of knowledge as well as info just from personal interest in animals), so they wouldn't say to me "You need to come back for X, Y, Z" and leave it at that, they'd explain why (I get faxed a copy of all Kiki's bloodwork too, looks total gobbledegook at first but I'm perfeclty capable of Googling to find out what abbreviation means what, and what an elevated level of this means, what a low level of that means and so on).
Afterall, you're the paying customer. If they have conviction in their decision, they won't mind explaining :)
  • I just spoke to someone from the vets, I'm not sure who was more confused by the end of the conversation, me or the lady :-) The head vet, who is fantastic I must add thinks the best option is to restart the vaccinations, he said he will still charge me the same price as 1 vaccine and he'll be able to assure me that there is no proven studies stating it causes any problems.
The lady who rang also seems confused about why the 2nd vaccine of another brand can not be used. She said some are not compatable and she's sure the head vet will be able to explain when I come in if thats ok with me. I've agreed to do that as no one in the area is using the duramune vaccine even the ones that used too, I'll have to ad that to my questions, why are they not using it.
I also did make a point of explaining although it's very kind of them to reduce the price it really is not about the money, I just don't want my pup to have more injections if they're not needed
  • Im not sure but i think it might be the manufacturer that say they cannot ensure immunity if you use different brands even though some of them are the same. im not sure, but it may also affect your insurance cover if your pup got parvo for example, as different vaccine brands may have been used.
  • A update;- went to the vets xmas eve as poppy is already 10weeks she only had to have 1 set of both injections but instead of having another set of both she's only got to have the lepto 1 again in 2 weeks. The vet explained it all, if she was younger than 10 weeks he would of had to do it all again, Pup will be protected enough to go out in a week but just to make sure the lepto lasts a full year she has to have that again. The vet also agreed that yes the 2nd vaccine is just to boost the 1st but he has to go by the manifacturers recommendations.

I had this with my rescue dog - in the end after a lot of faffing and not being able to get the compatible innoculation I had to have the course again with local vet. I wasnt happy about pumping even more chemicals into the dog, but was told there was no choice if I wanted to be sure it would protect him. Sickening. Why on earth isnt it standardised throughout the country.
