air lock in the hot supply to the shower or faulty or scaled up thermostat in the showerI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

that is indeed possible with the cylinder in the roofspace as OP reports. With a short vent pipe there is the distinct possibility of air being drawn into the vent but OP hasn't replied on how the shower is piped yet.southcoastrgi wrote: »air lock in the hot supply to the shower
but how would that account for the shower temp being fine with heating off but not fine with heating on? Could well be contributory I agree but not convinced that, if present, its the only problem.or faulty or scaled up thermostat in the shower
Good spot on age of backboiler (another 5 mins on the naughty step for me for not paying attention - where are you Cy?
) but history that OP has briefly hinted at suggests there could well be a pile of stuff wrong with this system which only adds to my feeling that this is only resolvable hands on in the property.

I don't know how the shower is piped, sorry.
The original installer put the flow and return pipes the wrong way round, which meant we only got hot water when the heating was on. He was a subcontractor from the firm who fitted the fireplace and took our money and ran.... The fireplace co had to pay up for his errors in court.
The firm who resolved the issue were very good so I don't think it is a residual issue and we have had no issues for 8 years.0 -

Oh well no worries.I don't know how the shower is piped, sorry.
Fair point. Trouble is we can't see it and feel it from his side of the interwebz so it makes diagnosis quite difficult unless its as obvious as a trunk on an elephant. The firm who resolved the issue were very good so I don't think it is a residual issue and we have had no issues for 8 years.
