* * *Telephone Scam Alert: fastsupport.com ***

America's FTC is cracking down hard on phony tech support companies that ring unsuspecting computer uisers to tell 'em they have a problem on their computer that needs urgently fixing.

The FTC has currently traced several outfits including Pecon Software, Finmaestro LLC, Virtual PC Solutions, Lakshmi Infosoul LLC, PC Care 247 and Zeal IT.

I've just had a call from another fraudster. The caller was an Indian male who identified himself as Jack and went through all the usual rubbish about how he represented "Windows" and how his "computer technical engineering support team" could help fix several "urgent problems" that had been identified on my computer thanks to the way "Windows" likes to look after its customers by regularly checking to see if there are any problems.

"Jack" wanted me to connect to the following address:

in order that his "engineers" could "show you just how many problems there are".

In other words, he wanted me to be stupid enough to let the scammers remote view my PC and then take me to my own Windows Event Viewer and be shocked / horrified / amazed at what it says.

Yeah. Right. I told "Jack" to go stuff himself for Christmas and have passed on this latest web address to the FTC.

But as scammers are ramping up theirs operations as far as the UK is concerned -- where, typically, we're nothing like as aggressive as US auityhorities in tackling cyber crime -- I thought I'd just pass on that web address here.

Remember: any call you ever get (usually from a "number witheld") will be a fraudster wanting you to give out your credit card details and pay for a "fix" that is a hoax through and through.

I dealt with "Jack" about 45 minutes ago, so this info is up to date.
