Electric Bill for 11 weeks and three days = £413

It's a student house, 6 people living here and we have no gas. Does this sound a lot to you or average?

We are all a bit shocked here at how high it is, but at the same time, we did not really know what to expect!

thank you!

Danny.

Not at all surprising - less than £40 a week.

If it was that cost for the preceeding 11 weeks and 3 days(i.e. back to mid-Sep) it could well be double that amount in the next 11 weeks - unless you all go home for the Xmas break.

Suggest you start reading your meters.

Does each student have an Electric Heater in their room?.

Unfortunately, it sounds harsh (but true) that a lot of students living away from home get that used to previously leaving things switched on at home that they also carry that trait into digs. Its only when it comes to footing the bill themselves that they start to realise how much things cost!.

    Yep, see point above :)

£6.25 each per week (split between six people) for Heat and Light is still a bargain, even if they are being careless with their usage. How does it compare with what is being spent every week over the bar? ;):):D

Put it this way, when you leave and get a place of your own, you could be finding upto £100 a month for a flat at this time of year!. Although in a few years it'll probably be closer to £150

Is the bill based on actual or estimated readings? If the latter, call your supplier with actuals and get rebilled. I trust that you took readings whe you occupired the property? Otherwise you may be paying for the previous incumbents.
If you want more meaningful advice, please post your actual kWh usage from your bill and not ££'s spent. The latter does not tell us anything about your actual usage.
Are you on the cheapest tariff? Supplier?
Night storage heaters or convectors? How do you heat your water?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • thanks so much for the advice guys

In addition to your academic learning, real world 'life skills' are absorbed when you look for independent [or more accurately interdependent student] living. Read a little about your heat & water system then come back with any questions you may have.
