Laptop (display?) problem

A few times (maybe 3 or 4) over the last couple of days, my laptop screen has suddenly become corrupted and just displays a mass of colour, almost like millions of dots.
The only way to get rid of this is to remove the power and then restart.
Once, the screen has simply gone black and the laptop died, almost as if the battery had suddenly ran out of power. (Laptop was on mains at this point.)
It's a Medion cheapo job from Aldi.
Any ideas?

1. take battery out, disconnect from mains, hold power button down for 40-50 secs, put mains charger back in and attempt to power-up.
2. plug lappy into external monitor to se if it's a graphics fault or display fault.
3. sounds like either screen, screen cable or graphics chip. 2. above will help narrow it down

It could be overheating.
Can you hear the fan running?
Also check the vents, they get clogged up with all manner of fluff and crud meaning you don't get proper cooling. See if you can clean the vents, a good starting place is to use a vacuum cleaner before you start taking it apart. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
